Is it true that Vertigo can be caused by fatigue? Find the answer here

Fatigue is sometimes difficult to avoid. Especially if you are still in productive age that requires you to work from morning to night. But, can this fatigue lead to complaints of vertigo?

Before you conclude, it is important to know first that vertigo is one of the most common health complaints. When vertigo, people will feel themselves or their surroundings spinning. According to Dr. Alvin Nursalim, SpPD, the cause of vertigo is diverse and the type must be differentiated first.

"The cause of vertigo itself is vestibular and non-vestibular. "If it is vestibular, it comes from the hearing organ, while the non-vestibular is outside of it," explained Dr. Alvin.

Relationship between fatigue and vertigo

Then, can fatigue trigger vertigo? Dr. Alvin said that the possibility was only a spinning head sensation and uncertain vertigo. Because, vertigo is usually caused by benign paroxysmal positional (BPPV) (calcium particles in the inner ear canal), meniere's disease (accumulation of fluid in the inner ear), and labyrinthitis (ear disorders due to viral infection).

"Yes, the sensation of spinning dizziness can be triggered by fatigue, but to determine whether the dizziness sensation is really vertigo or not, it should be examined first by a doctor," Dr. Alvin added.

Lay people often blame fatigue as a cause of dizziness. In fact, fatigue is only stimulation that worsens the initial disease, such as ear infections and brain disorders.

Fatigue is usually also related to feeling tired. According to Dr. Alvin, that feeling of fatigue is sometimes the biggest contributor to head discomfort. When you are too busy, you also forget to eat and drink properly. Your blood sugar becomes too low, causing dizziness, weakness, and blurred vision, all of which are similar to vertigo.

Thus, it can be said, fatigue can indeed cause a spinning head sensation, but the perceived dizziness does not mean vertigo. Need further examination from a doctor to diagnose whether it is vertigo or not.

How to handle it?

Handling this spinning dizziness must be treated according to the cause, and that means you can not arbitrarily consume vertigo drugs without the right diagnosis. If after being examined by your doctor proven to have vertigo, then the treatment is as follows.

  • BPPV = uses a maneuver to move calcium deposits out of the ear canal.
  • Tumors or injuries to the brain and neck = surgery.
  • Other ear infections / disorders = antibiotic drugs or vestibular rehabilitation to strengthen the hearing system.

However, if it turns out dizziness is not vertigo, then you must first overcome the root of the problem. For example, if the problem is lack of sleep due to continuous overtime, then just keep your sleep. If the root cause of the problem is known and treated, it is certain that spin dizziness will decrease by itself.

Also keep in mind, when you experience symptoms of vertigo, don't do activities such as driving and exercising, especially sports that need balance. You also have to pay attention to the intake of drinks by not drinking caffeinated drinks and alcohol so that the symptoms don't get worse. Of course, avoid being too exhausted in your activities so that vertigo doesn't recur frequently.
