Unexpected things that cause recurring miscarriages, you need to know

Miscarriage is an event that is not desired by each partner. The condition known as medical abortion is interpreted as the death of the fetus in the womb before the gestational age reaches 20 weeks.

The fact reveals that the incidence of miscarriages in women is around 15-20%, where the risk will increase if there is a history of previous miscarriages. In some cases, a miscarriage can recur more than 3 times. In medicine, a miscarriage that occurs more than 3 times is called a habitual abortion or recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). This situation was found in 1 in 300 pregnant women.

Until now, the cause of miscarriage is still unknown. However, experts suspect that the following conditions are closely related to the occurrence of miscarriages:

1. Genetic factors

About 2–4% of miscarriages are related to genetic disorders. Therefore, if you are a woman who often miscarries, do an evaluation and genetic test to see if there are chromosomal abnormalities or mutations in certain genes.

2. Anatomical abnormalities

Approximately 10-15% of cases of recurrent miscarriages are associated with impaired vascularization of the endometrial area or disorders of the placenta. In addition, problems around the female reproductive organs (polyps), fibroids, intrauterine adhesions, or congenital uterine anomaly (septum in the uterus) also contribute to the risk of miscarriage.

To find out whether there are anatomical abnormalities of the reproductive organs, you should do a hysterosalpingography (HSG) examination.

3. Endocrine system disorders

About 17-20% of problems in the endocrine system occur in women who have a miscarriage. Some endocrine disorders are related to this, for example polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), diabetes mellitus, thyroid hormone disorders, hyperprolactinemia, and luteal phase defect (LPD).

4. Infection

Toxoplasma, rubella, cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex (TORCH) and coxsackievirus are types of infections that often occur in pregnant women. All of them are closely related to an increased risk of miscarriage, especially in women who have a low immune system.

5. Others

Researchers say that women who are pregnant over the age of 35 are more at risk of miscarriage. Similarly, women who experience autoimmune diseases and thrombophilia (thicker blood). In addition, women who live in environments that are full of cigarette smoke, pollution, and have the habit of consuming large amounts of alcoholic or caffeine-containing beverages are also more at risk of miscarriage.

Miscarriage is a condition that cannot be tolerated, let alone repeated. If you have had a miscarriage and are currently in a pregnancy program, don't hesitate to consult with obstetricians and gynecologists frequently. This action is intended to find out what efforts can be made so that miscarriages occur again later on.
