Spending a Weekend with Sleep Makes You Fat

Fill in your weekend with something useful. Don't just sleep because you are tired of working for a week.

Recent research shows sleeping on weekends is not good for health. Sleeping on weekends can worsen the stomach condition. The study, published in the journal Current Biology, found sleeping on weekends can lead to increased body weight.

The researchers analyzed the sleep of 36 men and women divided into three groups for 10 days. All are people who have no health problems or newborns that can affect their sleep quality.

The first group had the opportunity to sleep for nine hours every night. The second group is limited to sleeping only five hours each night. While the third group sleeps up to five hours from Monday to Friday, it is permissible to sleep for as long as they want on weekends and sleep as early as Saturday night.

The result, researchers found that the two sleep deprived groups consumed more snacks after dinner. Their weight also increases, there are more men than women.

The group of men who were sleep deprived showed an increase in body weight 2.8 percent, while women gained weight by 1.1 percent.

While men who slept at the weekend showed a weight gain of 3 percent, and women rose 0.05 percent.

In addition to increasing body weight, sleeping on weekends is also associated with disruption of the body's ability to regulate blood sugar. People who sleep on weekends experience increased sensitivity to insulin, which increases their risk of diabetes.

"Weekend sleep is not protective. The point of this study is that if you sleep on weekends and your sleep patterns are bad, then you will eat too much, your weight will continue to increase," said director of sleep research at Johns Hopkins University Vsevolod Polotsky.

Polotsky assesses that weight gain occurs because of the influence of hunger hormones that arise due to chronic lack of sleep.

"The hormone leptin reduces appetite, while the hormone ghrelin increases appetite. We know from previous studies that sleep deprivation causes leptin to go down and ghrelin to rise, so you are hungry," said Polotsky.
